What is a Team?

DEFINITION OF A TEAM - a small number of people with complementary skills, who are committed to a common purpose, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.

Major components of successful improvement teams:

  • Content knowledge (tools and methods of QI)
  • Understanding team roles
  • Productive meetings
  • Good group dynamics (positive relationships)
  • Effective conflict resolution, problem solving, and decision making

Note these three traits:

  • Complementary skills
  • Committed to a common purpose
  • Hold themselves mutually accountable

Exercise: Reflect on a well-functioning team you experienced and write down some of the traits that made it a good team.
